Oh Tuscany!
If I had any real idea of exactly where inspiration comes from, I’d go there, find the foolish thing, bottle it, sell it, and retire to Tuscany
We have just returned from one of Tuscany’s most remote mountain villas. It’s a staggeringly beautiful ancient lump of Tuscan stone and a rabbit warren of rooms. Its partly renovated state adds to the romance and beauty of the place. But the thing that surpasses all expectation is the remoteness of it. You will hear no roads, engines, people, just the sound of the wind in the trees, the Tawny Owls, the barking deer, the occasional wolf, and the boar snuffling about.
We arrived on the Thursday evening and drove an hour or so from the tiny airport up, up, up into the mountain range. The villa sits at just under 800m ASL, which meant that although we were there just after mid-summer, the impossible Tuscan heat was cooler at that height and the breeze; calming.
Mind you, the thunderstorm that welcomed us was mightily impressive (almost as though we had arranged it!) Following that, sunrises and sunsets were as powerful as you’d imagine.
Next year we are heading back here in early June – and a maximum of 12. We took 8 intrepid and adventurous photographers this time and by the end of the course; friends for life. The walks through the hills, the visit to the Etruscan walled town, the river walk, the forest walk; all interspersed with photography learning and challenges. We had some portrait sessions, some still-life, some abstract to name but a few.
And the ethos of Photo Journey – taking people to places away from the tourist routes – completely covered at our sanctuary in the Tuscany mountains. A little slice of heaven.
And if you want to be a part of this amazing adventure next June, visit here!
