We have found that 8 is the perfect number – and 2 tutors on each course allows us a 1:4 ratio; better than most of our competitors.
It’s incredibly difficult to do Tuscany justice with words only. Its a timeless and romantic experience simply driving the long, sweeping roads even before you have the chance to explore on foot passing golden wheat fields, silver olive groves, ancient oak and chestnut forests with truffle-rich soil, pea-green vineyards marching in sharp terraced ranks on rolling hillsides form a graceful prelude to soul- soaring medieval hilltop villages and walled Etruscan towns. Then, of course, there are the mountain ranges; and it is here that we have discovered our photographic sanctuary.
A partly restored large and airy Tuscan Villa sitting in it’s own 40 acres of woodland and meadows some 800 metres above sea level. There are no near neighbours- but local friends provide fabulous olive oil, eggs, fruit & vegetables, chestnut honey and wines. There are a number of cucina contadina ( Farmer’s Kitchens ) nearby who provide mushrooms, wild boar cured meats and salamis.
And the villa? Other than pure beauty of the place , there is the traditional pizza oven or the bbq – the weather here is usually pleasantly warm and we avoid the heat of the summer and the cold of winter.
This is wild Tuscany; a Tuscany few will see and even fewer experience.

Every level of photographer is very welcome. The workshop is designed to be able to meet the needs of total amateurs right through to working professionals.
You will need to be able to walk for up to 4 hours in a day. We will not be pushing too far or fast, but we are at 800m in the hills of Tuscany and the weather can get pretty warm, so an appropriate level of fitness is required for this tour.
We can certainly advise. You’ll need to be able to be at Perugia airport when the rest of the group is there to meet the transport – the villa we are heading to is not on the transport network! If you have any concerns or questions, we would be delighted to help you solve them – we know the place pretty well. We want this to be as smooth a journey as possible, but without limiting your ability to be flexible.
Although the villa at Le Forde is our “base”, with kitchens and rooms for our use, we shall be staying in safari-type tents in the beautiful surroundings. Composting loos and showers will also be available – it’s a wonderful experience in these Tuscan hills.
In many respects, all you really need is a camera with ability to recharge, and enough memory to hold the images. Even if it’s just an iPhone, we can guide you all the way to better photography. For those looking for help with their bigger camera systems, we will email a recommended kit list to all participants well in advance of the departure date.
The climate at the time we are traveling should be very good, it’s likely to be quite hot. Although we are not expecting poor weather, you should be prepared. There will be occasions that we are walking in the mountains, so please bring suitable footwear for that.
You certainly do. Although we do our best to mitigate against problems, it is essential that you arrive with your own travel insurance. We will ask to see proof of insurance before we depart so that we can ensure everyone is as safe as possible.
As a business, Photo Journey has its own Indemnity and personal insurances, and we are fully covered through ABTOT and TOPP so that your money with us is protected. too.
