If you are planning an overnight stay in Denver before meeting up…it’s a wonderful city to explore!
Part of the future of Photo Journey involves America; and in Colorado we have found the perfect place. Remote, beautiful, adventurous.
Our good friend (and incredible explorer!) Levison Wood came with us on Photo Journey Nepal in 2020 and has now, with local experts, opened up his new venture in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, south of Denver.
On this course we’ll experience hot springs, ghost town, elk farm, hiking, tents around a camp fire, waterfalls, incredible night skies, cowboy ranches, vast sceneries….And of course photographic guidance from professionals.
What are you waiting for? The opportunity of a lifetime awaits!
If you are planning an overnight stay in Denver before meeting up…it’s a wonderful city to explore!
12:00 midday. Meet Denver Union Station
Scenic 4-hour drive along Route 285. Along the way, we’ll make a stop in the historic town of Crestone. If we have time, we will also make a stop at St Elmo Ghost Town.
Arrive at Dunes Desert Camp – your Photo Journey base.
In the morning, we’ll dive into photography theory, learning essential techniques to elevate your skills.
In the afternoon, we’ll journey to Zapata Falls. This picturesque location will serve as the perfect backdrop for your photography. Note – to reach the falls we will need to walk through the cold river for 100 yards, so bring river shoes if you have sensitive feet – bare feet are ok for the brave!
As the day draws to a close, get ready for a memorable sunset photography session.
In the morning, we’ll delve deeper into the photography theory at camp, honing our skills.
Today we will scale Star Dune for breath-taking panoramic views. It’s currently tied with Hidden Dune as the two tallest sand dunes in North America. It is a majestic dune now measuring 741 feet (225 m) from base to summit.
As dusk settles, we’ll set up camp under a blanket of stars in the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This is a dark sky designated zone so some night photography beckons.
Awake to the serenity of the sand dunes. Take your time to explore the dunes before we embark on a hike out.
Afternoon relaxation at beautiful hot springs.
After a relaxed morning exploring, we head back to Dunes Desert Camp for our final evening campfire and camp out. We’ll review the photographs and celebrate an incredible few days in Colorado.
Drive back up to Denver. We’ll be at Denver Union Station by 1pm.

Once you have joined us at the meeting point in Denver, everything you undertake on a photo Journey course is included. We have selected the best locations and most appropriate accommodation – mostly this will be twin shared tents (you’ll need a sleeping bag, but mattresses are provided). All arranged meals and travel, and all course activities and instruction are covered. You will be well looked after. Obvious exceptions to the above are alcoholic drinks, extra room costs (such as laundry and telephone calls) and personal expenses.
In general we aim for just 12 participants. So that will be a maximum of 6 per leader, although it is usually 4. We try to keep that ratio throughout on the practical elements of the course. We encourage maximum participation to the theory and lecture phase of the workshop.
Every level of photographer is very welcome. The workshop is designed to be able to meet the needs of total amateurs right through to working professionals.
As with the photography levels, almost all our workshops are designed to cater for all fitness levels. Here in Colorado, we are a little more austere in surroundings and environment, with some hiking involved. Nothing that would concern you if you are reasonably fit. We’ll do our best to make it all work.
Of course, but they should participate in all the activities. A small partners discount can be provided, please email for further information.
We can certainly advise. There are many possibilities, and of course you may wish to extend your stay either before or after the course. Colorado is a BIG state! If you have any concerns or questions, we would be delighted to help you solve them. We want this to be as smooth a journey as possible, but without limiting your ability to be flexible.
In many respects, all you really need is a camera with ability to recharge, and enough memory to hold the images. Even if it’s just an iPhone, we can guide you all the way to better photography. For those looking for help with their bigger camera systems, we will email a recommended kit list to all participants well in advance of the departure date.
Colorado is an exciting and adventurous place, and you need to be prepared for a certain level of hardship. If you bring the right kit, there is no reason this should be a problem. The kit list will be emailed to all participants in good time before we set off.
You certainly do. Although we do our best to mitigate against problems, it is essential that you arrive with your own travel insurance. We will ask to see proof of insurance before we depart so that we can ensure everyone is as safe as possible.
